Captain Walter Ashley Montgomery
Walter Ashley Montgomery was born on 4 May 1882, the seventh son of landowner Hugh de Fellenberg Montgomery and his wife Maria Sophia Juliana Montgomery (nee Maude), of Blessingbourne, County Tyrone.
Montgomery was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the North Irish Horse on 24 November 1914. On 28 April 1915 he embarked for France with a reinforcement draft of nineteen men. He then joined A Squadron in the field at Blendecques.
On 1 July 1915 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and on 15 February 1916, to captain.
When A, D and E Squadrons came together in May 1916 to form the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment, Captain Montgomery became the regiment's adjutant. He was mentioned in Field Marshal Haig's despatch of 7 November 1917.
On 15 July 1918 he was seconded for duty with the Royal Artillery Horse Lines. Five months later he took a personal staff role as an Aide de Camp.
Captain Montgomery relinquished his commission on 1 April 1920. He died at Brompton Hospital, Fulham Road, London, on 25 March 1942.
Montgomery was an uncle of North Irish Horse officer Hugh Edmund Langton Montgomery.
